Mary TallMountain, 76, also known as Mary Louise Randle, died Sept. 2 at Care West, a nursing and rehabilitation center in Petaluma, Calif. A memorial Mass was Sept. 25 at St. Bonifice Church in San Francisco followed by a memorial gathering at the Tenderloin Reflection and Education Center. Her ashes were brought back to Alaska by her executor and friend, Beth Saunders.

Ms. TallMountain was born June 19, 1918, in Nulato. At age 6, she was adopted by a non-Indian couple and did not return to her homeland for more than 50 years. She lived much of her life in San Francisco, where she became a popular writer and the author of eight collections of poems and stories. Her work appeared in dozens of periodicals and anthologies, including The Alaska Quarterly, The Los Angeles Times and The Harper's Anthology of 20th Century Native American Poetry. She performed and taught regularly in California and was featured in the PBS poetry series "The Power of the Word." Her spiritual connection to her birthplace, her family and her Native culture inspired much of her writing. When she returned to Alaska, Ms. TallMountain taught and performed as part of a tour arranged by the Institute of Alaska Native Arts and Poets in the Schools. Ms. TallMountain was deeply affected by the plight of the homeless and others dispossessed in society. She addressed issues of poverty, prejudice and destruction of the environment. Through her long membership in the Third Order of St. Francis, she brought together her radical Christian ideals with her Native Athabascan spiritual beliefs.

Ms. TallMountain is survived by her Alaska cousins, Agnes Ostlund, Elmer Manook, Alvin Manook, Ralph Manook, Poldine Carlo, and their children; cousin, Samuel Randle of Oregon; nephews and niece, Victor Alexie, Freddie Ben Alexie and Lidwin Solomon; and by other descendants of Old Man Demoski and his wife, Louise. Memorial donations may be sent to the Mary TallMountain Circle, P.O. Box 423115, San Francisco 94142.
