On November 20, 2023, Joseph Bruce Baum passed away at Pleasant Acres Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. JOEY was 51 years old, the son of Barbara A. (Zimmerman) Gruver. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Bruce Baum (RIP 11/25/2002) and stepfather Gerald L. Williams (RIP 10/2023).

A diagnosis of SPMR (Severely Profoundly Mentally Retarded) was determined by the Kennedy Center at Johns Hopkins University in 1975. This was complicated by CP (Cerebral Palsy); major/minor seizures; and legal blindness.

JOEY began his education at Kennedy Day Care Center, part of the ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens_ of York County. He continued through Lincoln Intermediate Unit classes, graduating in 1994 from York Suburban School District. After a brief stay at Nelson House in Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania, JOEY returned to York County in a Prospectus Group Home. Later under Shadowfax Corporation he remained in a group home until April 2023. Finally, he moved to his last residence at Pleasant Acres Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.

He loved to page through magazines; to play with toys that made noise; and to watch TV. Swimming or going for rides in the car were especially fun for him. He loved ice cream. JOEY was the happiest child, and man.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Barbara A. and Robert Z. Gruver, of York; a stepfather, David R. Ponta, of York; and a stepmother, Diane Hines, of Red Lion. He leaves six sisters and a brother, Jennifer A. (Baum) Schweizer, of Newark, Delaware, Jeane T. Nelson, of Highland Ranch, Colorado, Loretta E. (Ponta) Vaughn, of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, Michelle M. Williams, of York, Pennsylvania, Sharon L. Johnson, of Silver City, New Mexico, Brittany L. Ponta, of Lake Worth, Florida, and Bryan M. Ponta, of Lititz, Pennsylvania.

He was surrounded in life by additional family members, Karrissa and Katrina Clark, of Virginia, Charlotte Sanfillipo, of Lykens, Pennsylvania, Jim Snyder, Stacy Cole, Shawn A. Shedlock, Danny R. Evans, Betty E. Driscoll, Ashley Riley, and David R. Ponta, II, as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by Carl R. Jamison (RIP 7/2013)

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday January 27, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 South George Street, York, with The Rev. Dr. Alan J. Watt officiating. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements (please visit KuhnerEquities.com for any cancellation or postponement due to inclement weather). Private interment will be Trinity Gardens, of Prospect Hill Cemetery, beside his niece, Heather E. Rudy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in the name of JOEY to The ARC of York County, 497 Hill Street, York, PA 17403.

JOEY - Thanks for all the laughs and tears and all the love throughout the years. Mommy
