Enlisted, May 25, 1917, in Troop A, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, Brooklyn, NY. Troop A was assigned to guard the New York City aqueduct till the war was declared. The 1st NY Cavalry reorganized for the World War, as the 104th Machine Gun Battalion & 106th Machine Gun Battalions, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion. Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, was transferred and designated Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe , on May 18, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Wounded in action, by shell fire, Oct. 16, 1918, at the battle of Jonc de Mer Ridge ( vicinity of Ardre Guernon ) France. He was evacuated from the field , recovered at American Hospital # 33, Portsmouth, England and never to return to his Company. Returned to the States, via Graylingwell War Hospital, England, December 29, 1918. Hospitalize and discharged from the service, December 2, 1919. In view of his occupation he was , on date of discharge, reported 35% disability.
