On September 4, 1810, Young Kirk purchased 430 acres along Templeton's Branch in (now) Chester County, SC. At the time of the purchase, the area was part of York District, SC. Hugh Cain Kirk was the fourth child of Young Kirk (Some reports indicate it was John Young Kirk) and Catherine Akin. Hugh Cain had nine siblings.

Hugh's 1st marriage was to Nancy Plummer, Sept. 9, 1834 in Lewis Co., Tennessee and after her death March 15 1857 he married Mary A. (Noles) Byrum (widow of William A. Byrum), Nov 2, 1857 in Maury Co., Tennessee. Mary A. "Polly" Noles was the daughter of Butler Noles and Elizabeth Rappe.
