Bennet was a native of Waterbury, Connecticut. His father moved the family to the township of Vienna, in Trumbull County, Ohio in 1805. In 1818, Bennet purchased 100 acres in Tallmadge. He made a small clearing and built a log house. He married Sally Richardson on July 4th. 1820. They worked on their farm until Bennet's death at the age of 32.


Sally (also used the name Sarah) is the daughter of Deacon Ebenezer Richardson and Mehetable Clark of Middlebury, Connecticut. After Bennet's death, she returned to Connecticut and married Titus Bronson. They returned to the farm in Tallmadge and lived there a couple of years and sold it around 1829.
