Charles P. Quirmbach of Preston leased the Railroad Hotel in Berlin in
1874. It stood opposite Shantz's foundry in West King Street and was a long
white building with a verandah in King Street. It got its name from
Railroad Street, now College Street. On the lower corner of King and Young
Streets then stood Mr. Brueckner's cooper-shop, and next to it, an old
frame blacksmith shop. In 1876 the merchants employed Mr. Quirmbach as a
private night watchman, a position that he filled acceptably for nineteen
years. He was the father of Emil and Herman Quirmbach, the Rev. Albert
Quirmbach, and other sons and daughters.
