Julie Merritt Burke, 65, of Port Charlotte, Florida, died Saturday, February 10, 2001 in Port Charlotte.

Julie Ann was born September 2, 1935 in Pensacola. She was a ninth generation Pensacolian and Floridian; a descendant of such early Pensacolians as Desiderio Quina and Thomas Bobe. She moved to Port Charlotte in 1989 from the Atlanta area, where she lived most of her adult life. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1955 and attended the University of Tampa, where she was a member of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma sorority. While living in the Atlanta area, she tutored handicapped students. In Port Charlotte, Julie was Coordinator of Prayer Chain Ministry at the United Methodist Church. She was also active in the Optimist Club of Port Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul B. Merritt Jr.

Julie is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, J. Vernon Burke of Port Charlotte; her mother, Julia Merritt Pape of Pensacola; a brother, Paul B. Merritt III of Pensacola; and a step-sister, Joanne Kast of Pensacola; three nephews and six nieces.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2001 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with Dr. Henry E. Roberts officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Memorial contibutions may be made to United Cerebral Palsy of Pensacola, 2912 Northeast Street, Pensacola, FL 32501.
