One of 14 children of John H. and Hannah Mead Hopkins. His father was one of the earliest settlers (1803) of St. Lawrence County and both the Hopkins and Mead families were quite prominent in the Canton area of the county.

He married Laura Rice(5/10/1796 - 9/30/1853) on March 19, 1815 at Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co, NY.

Truman died in 1834 after which his wife moved to Ohio, where she died on September 30, 1853. She was buried in Defiance County, Ohio.
