Carrie Elizabeth Gilley (Lacy), peacefully passed away on November 9, 2023, at the age of 98 in Kingston, Tennessee. She was born on December 2, 1924, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to her late parents Homer Wilkins Lacy and Carrie Ione Lacy (Underwood).
Carrie was a woman of exceptional character, known for her unwavering devotion to her family and her esteemed career as a nurse. Carrie was a pillar of strength for her loved ones, always there to provide support and guidance. Despite her petite stature and gentle voice, she possessed a remarkable ability to command attention with a mere lift of her finger. The essence of forgiveness resided deeply within her heart, always willing to offer second, third, or more chances, even when it seemed impossible. Carrie's compassion left an indelible impact on the lives she touched, and her memory will forever be cherished.
Left to honor Carrie's memory are her beloved sons, Terry (Terry) Gilley of Colorado, Gary (Patti) Gilley of Missouri, and Bruce (Shelly) Gilley of Kansas. She is also survived by her dear sister, Kay Robinson, and devoted brother, Homer Lacy Jr. Carrie's legacy extends through her cherished grandchildren, Adam, Andrea, Carrie, Chad, David, David Joseph, Dawayne, Dusty, Jacob, Jennifer, Jessie, Jonathan, Lucas, Marcus, Mathew, Michea, Stephanie, and Wendy, who held a special place in her heart. Additionally, she was a loving and proud great-grandmother to a multitude of children.
Carrie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles L Gilley, who peacefully passed away in April 1998 after sharing 52 years of marital bliss. She also experienced the heart-wrenching loss of her daughter, Bonnie I Conner, in May 2023. Carrie's memory will forever be intertwined with those of her late siblings, John W Lacy, Francis A Lacy (Kirkpatrick), James E Lacy, and Mildred L Lacy (Lewey), who have gone before her.
Carrie's educational journey began at Sparta High School in Sparta, Missouri, where she graduated with distinction in 1942. Driven by her passion for caring for others, she pursued further education at Nursing Cadet School from 1944 to 1945. It was during this time that she experienced the trials of World War II, while her beloved husband served overseas. Upon Charles' return, they embarked on a remarkable journey together, full of love and shared dreams. Carrie dedicated most of her professional life to Shawnee Mission Hospital in Shawnee, Kansas, where her compassionate care touched the lives of countless individuals. Beyond her selfless dedication to her career, Carrie found solace in the simple joys of life. She possessed an insatiable curiosity and embarked on numerous adventures, both near and far. Exploring various destinations both within the United States and abroad, she embraced the beauty of the world. The family Lakehouse in the Ozarks held a special place in her heart. It served as a gathering place for cherished moments spent boating, fishing, and engaging in spirited games of Yahtzee or cribbage, all while surrounded by the love and laughter of her family. In her later years, Carrie found immense pleasure in the pages of books, immersing herself in stories that transported her to different worlds.
A solemn graveside memorial service will be held on November 17th at 1pm at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, where loved ones will gather to pay their final respects and honor Carrie's life. Prior to the service, a private family viewing will take place, allowing those closest to her to bid their farewells. Following the graveside memorial, all are invited to join Carrie's family for a heartfelt lunch at a local restaurant (TBA). This gathering will provide an opportunity to share treasured memories and celebrate the remarkable life she lived.
In lieu of flowers and memorials, contributions made in honor of Carrie can be directed to United Cerebral Palsy Charities. Carrie held a deep passion for this charitable organization, and donations to UCP of Middle Tennessee would be appreciated.
