Hannah Marie Howard, 88, former Stevensville resident, passed away at Valley View Estates in Hamilton on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004.

She was born on April 23, 1915, to Knayles and Cora (Hagen) Knopf in Erskine, Minn.

Hannah's parents were farmers in Minnesota. When she and Delbert "Red" Martin Howard were married on July 20, 1934, they had a small house on 40 acres near Detroit Lakes, Minn. Four of their children were born in Minnesota.

In 1941 Delbert and Hannah went out West looking for work, which he found in the Butte mines. They lived in Butte for several years where Delbert was a hard rock miner. Three more children were born in Butte. They moved to Metaline Falls, Wash., where he continued to work in the mines and their last child was born. In 1978 they moved to the Bitterroot Valley, retiring in Stevensville.

Hannah was a wonderful mother, wife and friend, and she leaves us with many wonderful memories.

She was preceded in death by her father, Knalyes, in 1953; her mother Cora, in 1986; a brother, Herman, in 1996; her husband, Delbert, in 1989; two sons, Leroy, in 1935 and James in 1948; a grandson, Allen Shane Howard, in 1986; two great-grandsons, Josh Howard, in 2001 and Lance Totland, in 2003; a son-in-law, Marion Sharp, in 2003, and a daughter-in-law Carol Howard in 2003.
