Remembrance

My sisters and I visited their father Mike at the trauma ICU to say goodbye before he passed. Mike is the only father I ever knew. He married my mom when I was 3, and they divorced when I was 10.

Mike Crowe taught me everything I know about politics. When I was a little girl we watched the daily news reports on Watergate together. He let me stay up late with him to watch every night of both the 1976 Dem and Rep conventions. I've never missed one since.

I will miss his calls before and after every election, prognosticating and then breaking down the results.

Mike shaped my progressive values on race and justice with his daily example of how to treat people. He was so proud of me graduating from Vanderbilt, and then Yale Law School.

An avid Tennessee fan, Mike taught me everything I know about sports. I speak fluent SEC football because of his tutelage. We watched the great Cowboys/Steelers matchups and every World Series game with Mr. October. A special treat was staying up late for Muhammad Ali's bouts, followed by the legendary Howard Cosell interviews.

He coached my T-ball team, taught me how to bat and field, and spent most Saturday mornings hitting monster pop flies for me to practice catching in the front yard of the old Bolton house, when we lived in Henderson.

Mike took our family camping on this little island in the middle of Pickwick Lake on the best summer weekends. While he and Mom set up the tent, I gathered wood for the campfire. My other job ages 6-10 was driving our huge ski boat up and down the Tennessee River for him to water ski. (Mom was busy with my little sisters.) Our favorite spot was this beautiful waterfall cove.

My favorite memories of childhood all feature Mike. I was his little shadow.

I was so grateful for the opportunity to thank Mike Crowe one last time for helping shape the woman I became.

Rest well, with my eternal gratitude and love.
