First Lieutenant, platoon commander with the 45th Armoured Infantry Battalion (Ermelo) serving with the Netherlands contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan. Aged 23, he had deployed only about two weeks earlier.

He and another soldier, PFC Mark Schouwink, were killed in a roadside bomb explosion 12 km northwest of Camp Holland, the Dutch military base in the southern province of Uruzgan. Two more soldiers were injured, one critically.

Dennis was the son of Gen Peter van Uhm, the recently-appointed chief of the Netherlands armed forces.

The two deaths bring to 16 the number of Dutch troops killed since the country's forces arrived in Afghanistan in 2006.

Repatriation ceremony held 20 April 2008 at Eindhoven airport, Netherlands. Funeral service held 25 April 2008 in Beuningen. His ashes were later interred in the Ereveld Loenen in Apeldoorn.
