Army Spc. Kleinwachter was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Kleinwachter was participating in military convoy operations in the Ghazni province when the vehicle he was riding in was involved in a roll over. He was serving as a power generator equipment repairer. Chris enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard while still a senior in high school. After graduating from Grand Forks Central High School in 1995, he reported to basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He was attending North Dakota State College of Science while working for Primewood, Inc. of Wahpeton when he was called to active duty in October 2005. Chris' family remembers a man who would take the brunt of someone's anger to make peace. His fellow soldiers remember a man who was a volunteer in every sense of the word; he wanted to serve so others wouldn't have to. On one occasion, he cleaned military barracks for four straight days even though he wasn't required. He continued to clean even when the sergeant told him to relax. Chris loved his family and enjoyed running, riding bicycles, playing basketball and other outdoor activities. His military awards include the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and the North Dakota Legion of Merit medal.
