Her family appears in the 1850 census of Jefferson County, New York: Michael Whalen (Ireland, 39), Elizabeth Whalen (Ireland, 35), with 6 children: Hugh (14), May A. (10), William (8), Charles (7), Elizabeth (4), and Eleanor (1).

Salt Lake City Tribune, Feb. 4, 1886, p.4. "WHALEN—At her residence in this city, February 3, 1886, Mrs. E. Whalen, aged 70 years. Mrs. Whalen was a most devout Christian and in full membership of the Catholic Church. She knows a large number of friends who will mourn her loss. ... Farewell, our dear mother, she has gone to prepare us a place where parting will be no more."

Probate records identify three surviving children: Emmeline Williams Fulton and Charles Whalen, both of Salt Lake City, and Elizabeth Wilkinson of Evanston, Wyoming.

The Mt. Olivet Burial Register lists Elizabeth Whalen, wife of Michael Whalen, born in Kings County, Ireland [now called County Offaly], died of old age, Feb. 3, 1886. Note that in the Salt Lake City Death Register, her surname was mistakenly written "Whitaker." A correction was made over the name but was later mis-transcribed as "Waldalin."
