William was a son of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Johnson (1696-1772) and Charity Floyd Nicoll Johnson (1692-1758). His father, Samuel, was a highly-regarded educator and theologian who was the first president of King's College, New York. William had gone overseas seeking ordination in the Church of England. He contracted smallpox in Cambridge and died in London. Friends deposited his body in a vault under the Church of St. Mildred, Poultry (London). Around the time the church was demolished in 1872, all the remains on the site were removed and re-interred at the City of London Cemetery.
