MECHANICVILLE - Mattia "Mert" Anatriello of Gilbert Street, passed away peacefully at home with his caring wife at his side on Friday, November 4, 2023, after a long illness.

Mattia, the husband of Mary Lou Canavan Anatriello, was born on September 12, 1937, and was the son of the late Mattia and Lucy Cavotta Anatriello.

Mert graduated from Mechanicville High School, class of 1956. Following high school, he studied mechanical dentistry at the N.Y.C. School of Mechanical Dentistry and was employed at The Empire Dental Laboratory in Schenectady for 15 years. Later, the building trades piqued his interest, and he joined the Albany Carpenters Local 370, which later became the North Atlantic States Carpenters' Union, working for over 40 years as a carpenter.

Mert was actively and avidly involved in the Mechanicville Volunteer Fire Department for 61 years as a firefighter and EMT. Chosen for many firefighting awards through the years, he was named Saratoga County Fireman of the Year in 2013. He was recently recognized at his home by firefighters, from Mechanicville, Stillwater, and Halfmoon with a drive-by parade, including a detail to present arms in honor of his genuine desire to assist others.

Mert was enthusiastically involved in coaching CYO Assumption basketball for more than 20 years. As a founding member of the Mechanicville Family Day Committee, he helped organize, coordinate, and implement community activities. Through his membership in The Jazz Agility Club, in Greenfield Center, Mert participated in dog agility with his Cocker Spaniels. Skillfully he trained the dogs to compete and won many ribbons. One of his dogs earned the title of International Therapy Dog.

Hoosic Valley High School students, in Schaghticoke, were often recipients of Mr. Anatriello's willingness to "lend a helping hand" at many of their special events and projects. The Notre Dame Club of Northeastern New York presented Mert with "The Spirit of Notre Dame Award" in 2016, for his years of dedication to its annual scholarship raffle where he raised more ticket sales than any other member for an entire decade.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou Anatriello; brother-in-law, Martin J. Canavan (Raleigh, N.C.), and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mattia was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. He leaves behind his agile black cocker spaniel, Ebony St. Francis.

Mattia's family sincerely thanks Saratoga County Hospice for its excellent care and comfort at a very challenging time, Dr. Yusuf Silk and family for their friendship and care, and John LeClaire for his unending guidance and support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, November 9, at 10 a.m. at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 North Main Street, Mechanicville. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. in the church.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Mert's name to Saratoga County Hospice, to a local fire department, or to a local animal welfare organization. Online remembrances may be made at www.chasesmithfamily.com
