Shirley Jacqueline Leaverton, 80, of Fort Madison, died Friday, April 18, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born Dec. 13, 1927 in Ethel, Mo. to James and Mary Spiess Kuntz. On Oct. 29, 1960 she married LeRoy Leaverton in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2007. She worked as a Payroll Manager for the Chevron Corporation in Fort Madison for over 30 years, retiring in 1992 as the Controller. Shirley sponsored a girl through Children International for years. She liked to crochet afghans, read books and do crossword puzzles. She also loved animals.
Survivors are three daughters, Melissa (husband Tim) Freeman of Independence, Mo., Leigh Leaverton (husband Steve Cullen) of Ft. Madison and Alice (husband Brad) Woody of Aurora, Ill.; three sons, Jeffrey Creen of Ft. Madison, Nathan (wife Laura) Creen of Grand Prairie, Texas and Matthew Leaverton (wife Liz Mannering) of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and her basset hound, Molly.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter-In-law.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008 at Soldiers Circle, Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Steve Rasmussen officiating. Per her wishes, her body has been cremated. King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials were made to the American Lung Association or PAW Animal Shelter.
