Margaret Lou Greimann, 90 years young, passed away peacefully at EveryStep Kavanaugh House on February 17, 2021. She was born on December 4, 1930, in Plainfield, Iowa, to Roy and Martha (O'Connell) Westervelt. She and her sisters, Alice, LuEtta and Lois and brother, Bud were raised on a country farm outside Plainfield, Iowa. She graduated from Plainfield High School and subsequently went to beauty school to become a beautician. She met and married her husband, William Lewis (Lewy) Greimann. They made a home in Chapin, Iowa, raised four children, David, Bob, Russ and Marcia. They spent a great deal of time with friends, Betty and Vern Lauffer, Joyce and Chuck Crabb, and DeAlta and Marvin Mckee.
Margaret loved to garden, join her friends in quilting during the winter, do canning and go camping with her family and Chapin friends. She enjoyed the biweekly trips to her father's home in Plainfield, Iowa, often playing Pinochle or 500. She was a "stay at home mom" until she and Lewy decided to move to Charles City, Iowa. She worked as a CNA at the Charles City Hospital for several years, then found her niche as an Activities Director at the Chatauqua Nursing Home in Charles City. She and Lewy had a special friendship with their neighbors next door, Ester and Alvin Morse. After Lewy died in March 1978, they were ever present in her life providing comfort, support and unwavering friendship. She became a foster parent to children of various ages. She brought so much love and support to her foster children who had been abandoned by their parents and never turned any child in need away. Margaret offered to raise her grandson, Eric, for three years while her daughter Marcia, attended graduate school in Texas. Once again demonstrating her never-ending love and devotion to her family. After she retired, she relocated to Altoona, Iowa, where she became very close friends with Antoinette and Tim Prohaska and Dave and Shareen Solseth. They helped her transition to her final home at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona, Iowa, ensuring her comfort and safety. They were trusted friends through her journey until her passing. She loved to play cards and bingo, visit with staff and residents and attend Chapel. She loved to walk the halls, sit, drink coffee and visit with her friends and staff at the coffee lounge to watch the cars go by. She enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren, doing embroidery and making dolls. She volunteered her time to the Kavanaugh House. She loved to travel and made many trips including New York City, Branson, Missouri, and the Panama Canal with her Chapin friends. She also traveled to England, Germany and Spain while her son Bob was in the AirForce. She had made many trips to California to visit her daughter Marcia and family. While there, they traveled to Napa, Ft. Bragg, Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park and Tahoe. Throughout her life, she made several trips to Pennsylvania to spend time with her son Bob and his family. One of her bucket list items was to experience the beauty and splendor of Alaska. So, in June 2014, she ventured there spending 2 weeks visiting Homer, Seward, Anchorage, Girdwood, Talkeetna and Valdez.
Margaret will be remembered for her kindness, sweet disposition, generosity and loving spirit. She was an unbelievably strong woman who enriched everyone she touched. She inspired her family to be the best people they could be and to treat everyone the way they would want to be treated themselves.
