Terry's Texas Rangers
Formed by Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry in Houston, August 1861, Terry's Texas Rangers distinguished themselves throughout the Civil War. In four years of service, they fought in 275 engagements often being use as assault troops due to their shooting skills and horsemanship. "Assault troops" were often the first to engage the enemy because of their mobility, riding through the perimeter defenses and ultimately attacking the vulnerable rear areas. In their first such encounter, Benjamin Terry was killed leading his men in a charge. Active in the Battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga and Chickamauga, Terry's Rangers became famous in the Battle of Gettysburg and became a thorn in the side of Sherman after he left Atlanta in flames.
Terry's Rangers were a special breed, ranchers, farmers, lawyers, etc., and independent to a fault. They wore no uniform but rather were of citizen dress of one sort or another. They refused sabers and instead all carried Bowie knives with pistols being their preferred weapon along with shotguns and rifles. Some carried as many as four revolvers belted about themselves. An inscription on the monument to Terry's Rangers on the Capital grounds in Austin reads from Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, "The Terry Rangers have done all that could be expected or required of soldiers.
