Song writer, composer, and publisher. He wrote, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling," "Jesus is All the World to Me," "Lead Me Gently Home, Father," and "There's a Great Day Coming." "Softly and Tenderly" hymn was sung in the Academy Award winning movie Trip to Bountiful (1985), and at a memorial service for American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, on April 8, 1968, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia.

Also he also wrote "Have I Done Any Good?" and "Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel," two hymns found in the LDS (Mormon) hymn book.
