UBURN, INDIANA – Betty J. Pepple, 93, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Auburn. Born in Columbia City, IN, on July 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Faith (Miller) Phend. She grew up and spent most of her childhood in Merriam, IN. Betty graduated from Wolf Lake High School, Class of 1943. After high school she worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne and then Frank’s Greenhouse in Columbia City.

In 1947, she married Merle L. Pepple. For 23 years they lived in LaOtto, IN, raising their three children. In 1970, she and her husband purchased The News-Tribune and moved to Hicksville, OH. Betty enjoyed church, family, flowers, and most of all, animals. One of her passions was watching sports of all kinds, especially basketball, and over the years she enjoyed watching her sons and great-grandson play. She was also an avid euchre player.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Tom) of Auburn, sons John (Marti) of Auburn, and Jeff of Hicksville; grandsons, Michael (Greg) Barth, Jonathan (Lisa) Barth, Anthony Pepple, Nicholas Pepple; great-grandchildren, Christman, Caroline, Jackson, Madison, and Taylor Barth; five step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; and her two beloved cats, Abby and Teddy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle; infant daughter Rose Ann; grandson Jared Pepple; siblings Harold Phend, Madeline Walters, Josephine Halter, and Evelyn Winebrenner.

Visitation is Wednesday from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Smith and Brown Funeral Home in Hicksville. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11:00am at Blue River Church of the Brethren in Merriam, IN. Burial to be at Merriam Christian Chapel Seminary.
