New Hampshire Governor. Educated at Gilford Academy, he worked in the family hosiery mill and then invested in railroads, banking and publishing industries. He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, (1878-79) and Mayor of Laconia, New Hampshire, (1892-93). In 1894, he was elected as a Republican the 54th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1897. While he was in office, sound financial programs were initiated to counter the state's declining economy, electric trolley service was promoted and the expansion of railroad service. After completing his term, he was President of Lake Shore Railroad and Director of the Concord & Montreal Railroad. He died of heart disease at age 58.
