Larry was born in Dexterville, to Bert and Olive (Pratt) Downing. He was married to Delores "Tootie" Alft on April 21, 1962, in Kellner.

He served stateside in the U.S. Air Force as an airman second class during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957. Larry worked as a factory worker and over-the-road truck driver for Consolidated Papers Inc. for 29 years until a disability forced his retirement in 1986. He was an avid hill climber and scrambler and enjoyed trapping, hunting and going to the casino. For seven years he did crafts with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Delores "Tootie;" children, Larry A. (Diane) Downing Jr., of Wisconsin Rapids, and Sheila (Stacy Roberts) Downing of Sheboygan; granddaughter, Nicole Phelps of Wausau; sisters, Karen Mahas of Noblesville, Ind., and Gloria Johnson; brothers-in-law, Ed Alft, and Harold Alft, both of Wisconsin Rapids, and Dale (Joan) Alft of Kissimmee, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Virginia Alft, Marlie Alft, Carol Alft, Sue Alft, all of Wisconsin Rapids, and Marge (Gene) Longpre of Mohawk, Mich., and Eleanor (Harold) McLellan of Necedah; half-sisters, Ann (Dean) Zielieski of Menomonie, and Jane (Arnold) Schutz of Pittsville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Larold; sister, Mary; stepmother, Theda; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Carl (Connie) Alft, Oscar Alft, Lester (Elaine) Alft, Jerry Alft, Francis Alft and Jerry Mahas.
