Katherine "Kay" Babbitt was born at Hartford, CT to Professor Frank Cole Babbitt and Ethel (Hall) Babbitt. Her father was a noted professor of Ancient Greek at Trinity College in Hartford. After graduating from Hartford Public High School with high honors, Kay Babbitt went to the University of Vermont where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and majored in Latin and Greek. After graduating in 1937, she held a series of civilian positions with the US Military for most of her working life. She worked for the US Air Force at Bradley Field in Windsor Locks, CT and at Stewart Field in Newburgh, NY and finally at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. where she spent many years. After retirement from West Point, she earned her masters degree from SUNY Albany in library science and worked at libraries in Cornwall and Highland Falls, NY. She was an officer of the Orange County, NY Historical Society and a member of the Friends of the West Point Library. She moved to the Wake Robin Continuing Care Retirement Community in 1993, where she made many new friends and helped to establish a library there.
Her internment was at the Babbitt family plot at Center Cemetery, Bridgewater CT, where her ancestors, the Babbitt and Cole families had lived for many years. Kate's grandmother, Sarah (Cole) Babbitt (1833-1898) was an avid reader and kept a daily journal of her life in Bridgewater, CT. even though her formal schooling was minimal. This journal can be seen at the Bridgewater Historical Society.
Katherine Babbitt was 92 years old at the time of her death. She was the final member of the Bridgewater Babbitt family.
