Lonnie was in the Navy and served during the Korean conflict from 1950 to 1954. Lonnie is a lifelong member of IBEW Local #20 and was a Mason. He married his wife, Pat, on August 31, 1956, and purchased a home in Mesquite, Texas and had two daughters, Belinda, and Sharon. They relocated to Kaufman, Texas before the girls started school. In 1985 Lonnie retired and relocated to Tyler, Texas and went into the Thoroughbred horse racing business. The pride of his stable was Miss Aggie Lou and Agrivating General.
He is preceded in death by parents, Lonnie O. Bates Sr., and Ruth Bates; wife, Pat Bates on August 11th, 2015; sister, Francis Smith; brothers, Charles R., and John D. Bates.
He is survived by daughters, Belinda and husband, Larry Reese of Garland, Sharon and husband, James Coffman of Lindale; grandchildren, Charlcie Kirkland, Kirstyn Hagen, Jennifer Owens, and Rachel Owens; great grandchildren, Dixie Faye Hagen, Cooper Lee Hagen, Brennen McCelland, Arlo McCelland, McKenna Kirkland, and Michael Kirkland: nephews, Larry Smith, Ricky Smith, Pat Smith and Brian Bates and Kelly Bates.
