He migrated from Augusta Co. to the present day Droop Mountain, Little Levels, Pocahontas Co. VA area south of Hillsboro, WV near Renick.
He was recorded in numerous large land transactions, helped with surveying and opening up roadways, and eventually passing there in 1817 with his will recorded in Bath County.
D.A.R and S.A.R records indicate that this James Edmonson served as a Private in Capt. John Hay's Co., 9th VA Regiment Commanded by Colonel George Mathews. His name borne on the rolls of that company for the period of April to Oct 1777 inclusive. The rolls for July and August show that he was wounded (family records say it was in the face). There are older D.A.R records indicating that a James along with his brothers Robert, Andrew, John, William and Samuel together with him were distinguished at Kings Mountain, 3 of them being killed. However this has been disputed. There were later records showing his brother William as survivor of the Battle of Kings Mountain serving under Colonel Campbell. (A036424). Eight Edmiston's and five Buchannan's went out from Fort Edmiston to fight. Five Edmiston's were killed, two wounded, one uninjured. He should not be confused with Capt. James Edmiston/Edmondson/ Edmeston/ Edmison (spelled 3 ways just in Chalkley's) the son of Robert who migrated to NC that had also served. Capt. James eventually moved to Fleming Co. KY in 1809 (brother William to Fulton Co). The more recent S.A.R. research was proven out in 2017 and distinguishes between the two men from the original D.A.R records. This was performed by a professional genealogist.
Of those he left behind - he died October 7, 1817, his widow Jane Smith, an immigrant from Ireland, after her husband's death became the second wife of James Gilliland, whose son William had married her daughter Ann, and thus became the stepmother of her son-in-law and the stepmother-in-law of her own daughter, without violating any law of the state or nature.
