Billy Clayton Gunn, age 90, entered Heaven on Monday, May 12, 2014. Born Sunday, July 22, 1923, in Tullahoma, Tennessee and is preceded in death by his parents, J. E. and Carrie Landers Gunn.
Mr. Gunn is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sue Dunnebacke Gunn; children, Mike (Linda) Gunn, Diane (Jay) West, Gina (Bill) Knox, Kevin Dunnebacke; siblings, Frank (Jeanette) Gunn, Robbie (Philip) Swinford, Frances (Tom) Shelton; 6 grandchildren, grand children: DeDe Gunn Sullivan, Michael Lee Gunn, Douglas Scott Knox, William Chandler Knox, Austyn Douglas Dunnebacke, Casen Lee Dunnebacke and 5 great-grandchildren, : Hannah Lauren Sullivan, Abby Brooke Knox, Aubrey Knox, Zackary Raymond Gunn, Maddox Xavier Knox.

Mr. Gunn graduated Tullahoma High School, 1942 and entered the U. S. Navy and served in World War II on the USS Sergeant Bay Air Craft Carrier as a member of the catapult crew, launching fighter planes. His ship was involved in 6 major naval engagements during WW II. He served from 1942-1946. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Coach Gunn entered Middle Tennessee State College where he graduated with a BS degree in Education and his BA from Peabody, Nashville, Tennessee. He lettered in football and baseball. He met and married Patty Gunn from Cornersville, Tennessee.

His first coaching job was at Wartrace, Tennesee High School where he coached football and boys and girls basketball. He served from 1948 to 1950; he moved to Oneida, Tennessee where he taught and coached football and boys and girls basketball as well. He won 2 regional championships in girls' basketball, which was as high as it could go in those days in girls' basketball.

Columbia Military Academy, a military prep school in Columbia, Tennessee was the next stop. He started out teaching and assistant coaching in football and head coaching in basketball. He coached five years as head basketball coach in which his teams won 112 games and lost 13 ( 7 in the first year ). They won three mid-south basketball championships and were undefeated the last two years.

He wrote several articles for Coach and Athlete magazine, a national publication, on defensive basketball. As an assistant they won two mid-south football championships. He became head football coach and athletic director in 1959 until 1963.

Coach Gunn moved to Pinellas County Florida in 1963 where he spent 4 years coaching and teaching. He moved to Nashville in 1967 spending the rest of his working life in administration in the Davidson County School system. In total, coach Gunn spent 22 years coaching and teaching and 19 years in administration. He retired in 1988.

A celebration of life will be conducted 12:00 Thursday, May 1,5 2014 in the chapel of Forest Lawn with Walter Lee George and Philip Swinford officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Lee Gunn, Mike Sullivan, Scott Knox, Austyn Dunnebacke, Casen Dunnebacke, Bob Lawson.

Family and friends will gather to remember Mr. Gunn at a visitation Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 3:00 until 8:00 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home 1150 South Dickerson Road Goodlettsville, Tennessee 37072
