D.C. TEACHER, COACH JOSEPH L. DREW DIES
Joseph L. Drew, 82, a retired teacher, guidance counselor and coach with the D.C. public schools, died Nov. 27 at the home of relatives in Riviera Beach, Fla., after a heart attack.

An Arlington resident, he was in Florida to witness a launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, commanded by his nephew, astronaut Frederick Drew Gregory.

Mr. Drew, a native of Washington, was a graduate of Dunbar High School and Howard University. He received a master's degree in guidance counseling from Columbia University.

He spent 37 years with the D.C. public schools before retiring in 1969 as a guidance counselor at Cardozo High School. He began his education career in 1932 as a physical education teacher at what was then Terrell Junior High School.

He joined the Cardozo faculty in 1950 and taught physical education there until becoming a counselor in the mid-1960s. He also had served as a football line coach and as head tennis, baseball and swimming coach. His swimming teams were undefeated from 1953 to 1962.

Mr. Drew also had served as a swimming instructor with the D.C. Recreation Department from 1929 to 1948, and had directed the Camp Pleasant youth summer camp in Prince William County from 1950 to 1956. He also had been a football official from 1932 to 1958, serving with the Eastern Board of Officials and the Colored Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association. He also had announced local high school games.

In 1958, he was cited by the D.C. chapter of the American Red Cross for 29 years of volunteer service. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi social fraternity and the Beta Nu Boule group of the Sigma Pi Phi professional fraternity.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Grace Ridgeley of Arlington; two sons, Joseph C., of Mitchellville, and Eric R., of Silver Spring; two sisters, Nora D. Gregory of Washington and Eva D. Pennington of St. Albans, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
