John Russell Thornock, 86, passed away April 16, 2008, in Montpelier, Idaho, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Bear Lake Memorial Hospital.

Russell was born on August 2, 1921, in Rigby, Idaho, to Aden and Lucille Moffat Thornock. He grew up on a ranch near Randolph, Utah, where he attended school and graduated from South Rich High School. He attended one quarter at BYU and then served a mission in the Central States Mission from 1942 to 1944. Only eleven days after returning from his mission he married his high school sweetheart, Emma Lu McKinnon, also of Randolph, in the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Russell served in the Navy during World War II.

Russell and Emma Lu celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Feb. 1, 2004, just a little more than a month prior to her death. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2004. Russell and Emma Lu were blessed with six children: J. R. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mary Lue (Glenn) Birch of Cokeville, Wyoming, Ernie (Karen) of Cokeville, Wyoming. Connie (John) Bird of Green River, Wyoming, Julie of Logan, Utah, and Jeff (Jolane) of Layton, Utah. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Lois Ann Brown, of Farson, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Willa Kennedy, one brother, Kay Thornock, and one great-granddaughter, Emma Bird.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 21, at 1 p.m. in the Cokeville LDS Chapel. Friends may visit with Family on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Matthews Mortuary in Montpelier, Idaho, and on Monday at the Church in Cokeville 11 to 12:45 p.m.
Interment will be in the Cokeville City Cemetery.
