After Christian's death she opened a boarding house in Michigan City.
Her birth family was from Posnan, Germany which is now Poznan, Poland. She was very stern in saying that "She considered herself German!!!" and "Don't call me Polish!"
She was raised on a large farm. She was 5' 8" and always thin when young.
She attended school and could read and write both "High" and "low" German. SHE LOVED TO DRAW! Especially HORSES and other ANIMALS! (This GENE passed onto her daughter and granddaughter). She used to get wacked on the knuckles for drawing by the schoolmaster. He would tell her; "Stop that foolishness and learn your numbers!"
She was a great reader and would rather read a book or newspaper then do her homework.
She had a wonderful memory and could tell stories by the hour of genealogies of royalty or the crowned or uncrowned heads of all nations.
She was a fine knitter and fulfilled many an order from family and friends for socks, mittens and stockings. She also had a "green thumb" for growing plants and flowers.
She immigrated to the USA when young with her family. It was due to hard times from drought and hail that devasted the family farming business in the old country.
They moved to and settled in Michigan City, Indiana. She was a housewife until hard economic times hit again and forced her to become a mid-wife and practical nurse in Michigan City, Indiana where she lived.
She had her father's faculty for getting along with all types of people. She had no prejudices against any race. She was always very proud. Always kept the outside of her house in good repair, even in hard times. She was not one to gossip but, often people and family trusted her to tell their troubles to her as she was discreet and was a good listener. She believed in getting what you paid for, so why throw money away on cheap goods that would break all too soon. She aways wore bonnets. They lasted many years as they were always made of the best material.
She had a fine sense of humor and could joke and laugh with the best of them, however she never got to loud or boisterous.
She was a staunch Republican and believer of capitalism! All her life she believed America was the greatest country on earth! It was where she heard as a little girl that "money grew on trees".
This Bio comes from her loving daughter Amanda, who really cared about the family genealogy being passed down!
