A letter, undated, to one of Alcinda Miller Devier's children, from her niece, Nancy Elizabeth Kellar Perkins was found in the family Bible of Hugh and Alcinda Devier living in MO. It reads:
Dear Cousin,
This eve finds me with pen in hand trying to drop you a few lines in ans. to the letter that Ma [Catherine Ann Miller Kellar in Prole, Warren Co., IA] got from you and as she is not able to write she requests me to write for her. Mother is down with lung fever and she is very bad. She thinks Aunt [Alcinda Elizabeth Miller Devier] ought to try and come to see her. She can come if she can visit other places. I think that mother is failing fast and that if she should get over this that she cannot live long, and I do think that if Aunt ever intends to come that now is the time. Ma took sick last Monday night - has been confined to her bed ever since. The rest of our family are all well. And we hope that this will find all of your folks well, but if she gets any worse then we will let you know at once. She is living alone but we have got her a good girl and I stay there nearly all the time and I am at my own home at present but going over to this one. [sic] Now we want Aunt to come if it is possible for her to do.
So this is from your cousin, N.E. Perkins
