Son of Francis Ater and his wife, the former Martha Kay Crews. Born 19 August 1963 in Jacksonville Illinois. Known familiarly as "Jim."

Received his education at Triopia School in Concord Illinois. In 1977 moved to Rutledge Illinois. Belonged to 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Graduated Scotland County high school in 1981. Graduated with honors from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa Iowa.

In June of 1981 he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves and became a squadron leader.

Worshiped as a member of the Rutledge Christian church.

Francis Ater passed away 24 November 1985 at a hospital in Memphis, Scotland county, Missouri. His grandmother, Grace Ater, predeceased him.

There were two services, in Missouri and in Illinois. Reverend Bob Schofield and Reverend Kenneth Campbell presided over services held at a funeral parlor in Edina Missouri. Reverend Don Hatfield and Reverend Vernon Priest led services held at Concord Christian Church in Concord Illinois. Interment took place at Concord cemetery.
