Julia Holstead Gerbens passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023 in Sugar Land, Texas. She was born February 15, 1917 to John and Eula Holstead in Ruston, Louisiana.

Julia is predeceased by her parents; husband Harry Gerbens; son Robert Gerbens; stepdaughter Judy Benkendorfer; and sisters Blanche Parks, Evelyn Felder, Clara Armitage, and Brothers John M., Victor, Preston and Harold.

Raised in the farming community of Pioneer, Louisiana, Julia graduated from high school at age 16 and became a nurse after completing Shreveport Charity Hospital's nursing program in 1939. She married and gave birth to daughter Patsy Elaine, later divorcing and moving to Nederland, Texas. While working at Nederland High School, she met and married Harry Benjamin Gerbens, who also had a daughter, Judy Bell. Their family grew with the birth of daughter Linda Elizabeth and son Robert Marshall.

While raising her family in Port Arthur, Julia was active with Lakeview Methodist Church, Camp Fire Girls, Port Arthur Garden Club, the Delphian Club and other civic organizations, in addition to supporting her children's school and extracurricular activities.

At Harry's passing, Julia moved to Sugar Land, Texas where Linda and her family lived. There Julia joined Christ United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the Jubilee Class. Several of the ladies met monthly in their homes to play Mexican Train and together made several trips to local and out-of-state destinations. Julia loved travelling to see beautiful and interesting places. She always maintained a lovely home and garden and was a gracious hostess when friends, neighbors and family visited. Into her 80's, she delivered Meals on Wheels and worked at the Food Pantry. She took interest in a wide variety of subjects, with her favorite being the stock market. She was a fighter, tough, resilient, and full of charm.

The grand matriarch of the family, Julia will be remembered and loved by her daughters Patsy Wilder and Linda (George) Adams of Sugar Land; grandchildren David Jameson of Houston; Katie (Brett) Wenglikowski of Willis, Texas; Kyle Benkendorfer of Chapel Hill NC; Daryl (Susan) Benkendorfer and Scott (Angela) Benkendorfer of Austin; Carter (Gretchen) Benkendorfer of Corpus Christi; three step-grandsons; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many loving nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren.

The following services will be held at The Settegast-Kopf Company at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77478. Visitation from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, funeral services from 2:00pm to 3:00pm with a reception to follow. A private family Graveside Service will be held Saturday September 23, 2023 at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches, TX.
