Irish Aristocracy. Born at Portumna Castle, County Galway the youngest daughter of William Burke, 7th Earl of Clanricarde and Lady Helen MacCarty. She married General Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan in January 1689. The couple had one son. After their marriage, they went to live at Sarsfields House at Lucan, County Dublin. She was a noted gardener and managed the gardens at Lucan. After the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, Lucan became dangerous territory for Jacobites and the family fled to Portumna Castle. When her husband was killed at the Battle of Landen in 1693, she and her son lived in poverty for two years before the James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, son of James II, deposed King of Great Britain and his mistress, Arabella Churchill, offered her rescue. Smitten, he married her in March 1695. The couple had one son while living in exile. After a second pregnancy ended in miscarriage, she became progressively weaker and succumbed to consumption at age 24 in Pezénas, Languedoc, France. The Duke had her heart preserved in a box and had it buried in the Church at Pezenas two days after her death. Her body was interred in a white marble tomb in a side-chapel of the Church at the Abbey of the English Benedictines. Her name has also been recorded as de Burgo and Bourke.
