Michael Meyer was born in Edingen, Germany, the son of Johann Georg Meyer (1842-1920) and Maria Elisabeth Hoerauf (1842-1913). He was 16 when he immigrated to the United States in 1885 with his brother Philip Meyer, 10, and maternal uncles Georg Hoerauf and Michael Hoerauf. He settled at Chicago, Illinois, where he remained for two years. He relocated to North Dakota where he was employed by a lumberyard at Glen Ullin in Morton County. He married Ella Schermerhorn at Fort Rice (Sweet Briar) in Morton County on January 1, 1893, and they resided at Glen Ullin where a son and twin daughters were born. One of the twins died shortly after her birth and was buried in the Glen Ullin Cemetery. He moved his family to Mott in Hettinger County in 1897, where he remained until his death in 1915 (1900, 1910 US Census). His remains were returned to the Glen Ullin Cemetery to be buried beside those of his infant daughter Estella. After his death Ella and the children relocated to Campbell County, Wyoming (1920 US Census). In 1922 she moved to Los Angeles County, California. She had settled at San Pedro by 1924 and remained there until her death in 1942 (1930, 1940 US Census).
