Milton E. Aunan, Sr. of Mill Pond Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Johnston, Iowa, died peacefully in his sleep on September 21, 2023. He was 94. He is rejoicing at seeing his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Milt was born February 6, 1929, in Chicago to Bert and Ingeborg Aunan, immigrants from Norway and soon moved with his family to Sioux City, Iowa. He was the third of four sons, his brothers being Norm, Barney, and Bert Jr. Milt also had a close cousin, Mareen Erwin of Spencer, Iowa, who lived with them as a "sister" for many years.

Milt married his high school sweetheart, Bunny Drier, on April 3, 1947. They had four children – Kevin; Milt II (Corene), Urbandale; Marcia (Dr. Kenneth) Hansen, Ankeny; and Eric, Urbandale. He has 11 living grandchildren and 31 living great-grandchildren.

He worked for NW Bell (US West, Quest, Century Link, Lumen) for 42 years as Operations Manager – Operators and Directory Assistance, and other District management positions in Sioux City, Des Moines, and Davenport, Iowa.

Milt was also very active in his church, the Evangelical Free Church (EFC), serving as Chairman of the church, deacon, youth sponsor, as a teacher of Sunday School for many years, and directing the choir, into which he put his whole heart. The churches he served were in Sioux City, Des Moines, Moline, Illinois, and Ankeny. In Sioux City in 1948, along with the church pastor, established "The Beacon Hour" radio program that was broadcast throughout northwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska for many years.

Milt also was one of the founders of the Christian camp, Hidden Acres, near Dayton, Iowa. He and Bunny did many hours of volunteer work there. He was a previous board member of the Boone, Iowa, EFC Retirement/Nursing Home. He was also President and a founder of the Ankeny Rotary Club and also served on the board of Valley View Village in Des Moines.

Milt was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bunny, son Kevin, brothers Norman and Bernard, sisters-in-law Janet and Loretta
, nephews Douglas Aunan of Iowa City and Steve Aunan of Bloomington MN, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.

Surviving family members include brother Bert, Jr. (Sharon) of Frisco, Texas, three of his children and grandchildren except those mentioned above, and 31 great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts, made out to either Hidden Acres Christian Center or Westchester Evangelical Free Church, with Milt Aunan noted in the memo section, should be sent to Dr. Kenneth Hansen (Marcia) PO Box 139 Ankeny, IA 50023. Gifts will be collected and given to Hidden Acres and Westchester for memorials to be decided by the family.

We will all miss Dad's cheerful smile he gave every day when we visited him. He was always ready to chat and talk about his experiences in life, share his wisdom, sing hymns and recite Bible verses from memory. The Lord has welcomed one of His blessed saints into glory!!!

On Saturday, September 30, 2023, a visitation at 9:30am followed at 10:30am by a memorial service will be held at Westchester Evangelical Free Church (4919 Aurora Ave, Des Moines). Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 1:00pm
