Gene was the middle of three children born to Horace Clarence Sr. and Katherine V. (Hartman) Whitley. He married Nellie Ruth Bost in 1954 and they had one son: Jeffrey Dwayne.

ALBEMARLE -- Mr. Gene Hartman Whitley, 72, died January 23, 2004. Graveside service is 4 PM Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is assisting the family.
