Robert Morris Adkins was born October 9, 1870 in Street Road, Ticonderoga County, New York. His parents were Orlando W. Adkins (1937-1912) and Mary L. Newell Adkins (1836-1910). Robert was one of nine children in the family: Willis, Elmer, Netti, Jennie, Eddie, Robert, Lena, Laura and Lotti.

The Spanish–American War was a conflict between Spain and the United States, effectively the result of American intervention in the ongoing Cuban War of Independence. American attacks on Spain's Pacific possessions led to involvement in the Philippines.

On September 14, 1899 he enlisted as a private in the Hospital Corps at Camp Bomus, Chicago, IL. He was honorably discharged Sepember 23, 1902. While in the Hospital Corps he met his wife Katherine who was also in the Hospical Corps.

The inscription on his gravestone reads: New York, Private, Hospital Corps.

On Otober 9, 1902 Robert married Katherine Love Norris at the age of 32. They had one child Frances Love Adkins (1903-??).

In 1905 they lived in Waukesha, WS and in 1910 they lived in Jacksonville, FL. In 1915 they lived in Ticonderoga, NY and in 1920 they lived in Russell, MA. The moved to Palo Alto, CA in 1930. In 1940 they were living in San Mateo County, CA.

Robert died July 19, 1947 in Los Angeles County and is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA where his wife is also buried.
