Ballet Dancer, Choreographer. She was a pioneer in the world of modern dance and created a unique interpretation of emotion in movement. She became the first dancer to perform in the White House, and she later won the Medal of Freedom. She commissioned many ballets for her troupe, most famously composer Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" (1944), and later founded the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance. She was active in the dance community until the day she died at 96. In 1998, Time magazine named her "The Dancer of the Century".
