He joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1909, from where he played football for Derry Celtic from 1910.
After discharge from the army, he moved to Scotland and joined St Mirren FC in 1919. A year later Chelsea FC signed him and he made 16 appearances as a centre half and wing half.
Two years later he was transferred to Swansea Town FC but a knee injury in January 1923 appears to have stopped his professional career.
Moving to Felixstowe in the mid 20's he took the trade as a painter and decorator.
Moving to Hull in the late 1930's and other than 2 years in America 1953 to 1955 he remained in Hull until passing on the 18th September 1975.
