MURPHYSBORO -- Lyle Bishop Attig, 80, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Rehab & Care Center of Jackson County.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, at Crawshaw Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Gideons, Lions, First Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society, Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children, or to the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Early in Mr. Attig's career, he owned and operated an auto parts store for 12 years in Jefferson City, Mo. He was the owner and operator of Lyle's Sports Center in Murphysboro for 36 years and retired from the Sports Center in 1993.

He was a 50-year member of both A.F & A.M. Lodge No. 498 of Murphysboro and the White Shrine. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebecca Club of Ava, Murphysboro Lion's Club, was past District Governor of IC south Lions Club and was a member of Gideons. He was a past Jackson County Board Member and Chariman of the Nursing Home Board, past Murphysboro Township Board Member and a member of Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Murphysboro, where he had served as a member of the board of trustees and as superintendent of Sunday school.
Mr. Attig was a former leader of the Explorer Scouts. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. For many years, Lyle was also host of the Southern Illinois hunting and fishing report on radio station WINI.

Lyle also enjoyed working in his yard with his flowers and his vegetable garden.
He was born on May 17, 1921, in Tomahawk, Wis. to The Rev. Fred G. and Velva (Bishop) Attig.

He married Dorothy Mae Reiman on June 15, 1941, in Murphysboro. She survives of Murphysboro.

Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Ruthelma Attig of Murphsyboro, Rick and Stephanie Attig of Lincoln, Neb.; four brothers, Maurice Attig of Laona, Wis., Walter Attig of Mascoutah, Wayne Attig and Austin "Bob" Attig, both of Murphsyboro; two sisters, Berea Tribbey of Largo, Fla. and Charlotte Lundy of Denver, Colo.; a stepsister, Myrma Howard of Wisconsin; a stepbrother, Garland L. Harrell; three grandsons, Chuck Attig, Timothy Attig and wife, Chrissy, of Ava, and Garrett Attig of Lawrence Kan.; two granddaughters, Stacy Shields and husband, Scott, of St. Louis, Mo., Marci Attig and husband, Aaron, of Lawrence, Kan.; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Attig, Jacob Attig, Alexis Flory, and Abby Shields; and many nephews and nieces.
One son, Leland Attig, preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 1997. His parents, stepmother, Opal (Renshaw) Attig, and great-grandson Christopher Attig also preceded her in death.
