Harry Eugene Schulte
Harry Eugene Schulte was born on July 9, 1919 to Josephine (Schuler) and Harry G. Schulte in Yellow medicine County, MN. After graduating from Gary High School, Gary, SD, he farmed with his father for several years. In 1941 Harry entered the Army with the 164th Infantry and served in World War II for 4 years, 4 months and 4 days in the south Pacific. Harry earned several medals and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Harry and the love of his life, Iona Miller, were married on February 28, 1949. They farmed near Gary, SD for several years and had three children; Barbara, Susan and Jim. They then moved to Bradenton, FL where they lived for 10 years and where Harry worked as a carpenter building custom homes. They then lived in Wabasso, MN for 2 years before returning to Gary, SD in 1962. There Harry and Iona ran the hardware store. Harry later joined H-D Electrical Cooperative in Clear Lake, SD working there as an electrician until he retired.
Harry is perhaps best known for his many skills, including carpentry, electrician work, and mechanical ability, general trouble-shooting and repairing skills. He is also known for his sense of humor. In fact, one of his doctors described him as "a jolly fellow." Harry and Iona are long-time members of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gary, SD. Harry volunteered his time making repairs and maintaining the building as well as being responsible for locking and unlocking the church for Mass and other church activities. He was on the church board for several years. Harry also served on the NTC Board of Directors during his retirement and volunteered at Gary Historical Society functions. He was a past member of the Gary Fire Department, the American Legion and the Gary School Board. Harry especially loved to travel.
Harry is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Iona (Miller) Schulte; two daughters, Barbara Thurman, Colorado Springs, CO and Susan Schulte, Eden Prairie, MN; one son, Jim Schulte, Spearfish, SD; 3 grandchildren; Gabrielle (Chris) Seeley, Genevieve (Joshua) Summers and Eve Schulte; one great-grandchild, Samuel Seeley and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Harry G. and Josephine (Schuler) Schulte, one brother, Bernard Schulte and one sister, Mary Anderson.
