Wilhelmenia Turner, lovingly known as "Menia", was born in Augusta, GA on August 4, 1936 to the late Mr. and Mrs. C. and Pinkie Turner. Menia grew up in Augusta, GA among siblings and friends with whom she attended Augusta Public Schools.

In her late teens, Menia moved to New York, NY where she was surrounded by her siblings (who also moved to New York), family and friends. She held many jobs throughout her career -eventually retiring from the New York State Department of Labor after a bone-breaking fall in a New York subway on her way home from work.

The fall left this hard worker -both on the job and at home-unable to continue working and made living difficult in her two-story home.

Menia called several New York boroughs home-including the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn - before becoming a proud homeowner in Newark, NJ where she lived for many years and hosted get-togethers for family, neighbors and friends with her generous and incomparable cooking skills. Menia, also known as the "Queen of Greens" by all who tasted her mouth-watering collard greens or mustard greens, always had a fresh batch on her stove and fed anyone who stopped by. Menia was an excellent cook: There wasn't a dish that she couldn't cook or didn't leave you wanting more helpings. She generously cooked for her son, Rick, for many years when he married and started a family nearby.

As extraordinary as her cooking skills were, Menia had an equally large heart and outsized, lively and fun personality all of which she generously shared with everyone. Menia opened her home to and fed numerous minor and adult relatives and friends -and pets--whenever they needed a short-term or long-term place to stay. She always lent a sympathetic ear: It's hard to remember a time when Menia wasn't being a "mother" to someone in addition to her two sons, Rick and Michael.

Menia's joy and love of life livened every gathering: She was well-read and enjoyed dancing, cruises, and playing the lottery! Menia departed this life at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at New Grove Manor Rehabilitation Center in East Orange.

Menia was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Marguerite Brown, Janie Dalton, Harold Turner, Johnnie Mae Burke, Frankie Turner. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Rick Turner Richardson of Clermont, FL and Michael Turner of Newark, NJ; grandchildren, Angela Dent, Brittany Richardson, Kristen Richardson, Michael and Miracle _; and great-grandchildren, Brandon Dent and Brianna Dent. Menia is survived by her sister, Nell Dalton of New York, NY and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who've known her from childhood or later in life.

"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
