Daughter of William Hamilton, a school teacher and native of Scotland, and Mary Clayton. She married West Point graduate William T. Magruder in Baltimore on 10 July 1860. He resigned from the US Army in 1862, went to Richmond, joined the CSA, and was killed at Gettysburg.
It is probable that Mary is the woman in the portrait attached to his memorial.

She married W.F. Lewis on 14 November 1867. They had four known children.
