Arthur Karlen, son of Emil and Nannette (Ruchti) Karlen was born September 28, 1909, on a farm south of Houghton, South Dakota. He attended Karlen grade school, and graduated from Columbia High School with the class of 1927. Art was the oldest living graduate of Columbia High School when he died.
He was united in marriage to Florence Meta Krause on June 9, 1931 at Peace Lutheran Church, Hecla, South Dakota. They farmed until October of 1974, when they retired and moved into Hecla. Art then worked at the Hecla Lumber Company until 1992, when he retired for good.
Art was a member of Peace Lutheran Church for his entire married life. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and visiting with family and friends.
Art died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at the Oakes Community Hospital. He was 97 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; four daughters, Joyce (Ron) Corliss, Hecla, SD, Leora "Corky" (Earl) Brady, Oakes, ND, Loraine (Darrel) Dinger, Rochester Hills, MI, and Margie (Ben) Hansen, Hecla, SD; a brother, Harley Karlen, Hecla, SD; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Walt, Gilbert, Rudy, and Paul, 3 sisters, Florence Rathert, Alice Stolle, & Irene Krage, and 3 great-grandchildren.
The funeral for Arthur Karlen, of Hecla, SD, will be Friday, April 27, 2007 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hecla, SD, with Reverend Chris Prumm officiating.
Burial will be in the Hecla City Cemetery.
Casketbearers for the service will be Arthur Corliss, Keith Corliss, Michael Brady, Dean Dinger, Brian Hansen, and Jon Hansen.
