Formerly known as John Butterfass and John Katzenmeier. The son of Frederick Butterfass and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Katzenmeier) Butterfass, John took his mother's maiden name as his own and was part of a branch of the family that subsequently changed that name to Meyer.

He was killed in action in France on 18 Aug 1918 (some records say 19 Aug 1918), serving with Company I of the 306th Infantry Regiment.

The depicted marker at Green-Wood may be a cenotaph, as no corresponding burial record at Green-Wood has been found and there is record of a burial in France that matches John's information except as to the middle initial.
