She was the second of four children born to William Lafayette and Martha Gholston Neal.
She attended Sam Houston State Teachers College and taught school for a short time. She later became the first woman to serve on the the board of regents of the State Teachers Colleges, the first woman to register to vote in Panola County, Texas, the first woman member of the State Democratic Executive Committee, and was elected to the Texas Senate in 1926 and served four terms. Margie never married.
