OLIVER P. CARSWELL.
CARTHAGE,
Representative from the Twenty-seventh district, composed of
Panola and Rusk counties, was born in Talbott county, Georgia,
January 21, 1848. His parents, Joseph and Priscilla (Baker)
Carswell, died at Carthage tn Panola county, Texas, just preceeding the publication of this work. His father was a retired farmer
·and merchant; his mother, a daughter of the late Willis P.
Baker of Georgia.
Oliver P. Carswell completed his literary education at the
Kentucky University; served in the Georgia state troops during
the late war and took part with bis regiment in the fighting in
and around Savannah and Atlanta; moved to Panola county,
Texas, with his parents. in 1867, and has since been engaged in
farming and teaching school there. He was married to Miss
Mary .Bailey, daughter of James Bailey of Magoffin county, Ky.,
at Salyerville, that state, in 1878, and has five children: Robert
Emmett, Olive B, May G., Myrtle R, and Gracy, The four
first named are at present attending the Carthage High School.
Mr. Carswell is a member of the Christian church and I00F fraternity. . Immediately after the war be was appointed County Clerk of
Panola county, and, served as much, until the old officers could
take the oath required.
He has attended local and state Democratic conventions, and has
always electioneered in the interest of his party and been one of
its hardest workers in Panola county. He was nominated.in 1896
and elected to the position he holds.
He is a member of the following committees: Education, Rev .. enue and Taxation, and Private Land Claims .
