Islington born, Roy first appeared at Bishops Stortford in the amateur Delphian League in 1952/3.

An inside left, he signed for Chelsea as an amateur late in the 53/54 season. He made 14 Football Combination and "A" team appearances including the Metropolitan League Professional Cup Final win over Gravesend & Northfleet.

After signing professionally Roy came to the attention of Chelsea fans with a hat-trick in the pre-season Blues v Reds public trial match (3-3).

Roy picked up a Combination champions medal in 1954/5 but never played in the first team which won the First Division League championship.

Roy played over 70 games at Combination, London Midweek and Metropolitan League levels scoring over 25 goals, before moving to Bexleyheath & Welling in 1955/56.

Programme notes for Roy's testimonial in April 1963 and several anecdotes from other sources confirm that he became a significant figure both on and off the field at Bexleyheath as they progressed from the Kent League to promotion to the Southern League Premier Division and winning the Kent Senior Cup in 1960/1.

At the end of his last season at Bexley in 1963/4 Roy held the club records for both appearances- 411- and goals, which was reported as either 245 or 248!

For much of the 1960's and 70's, Roy was football and cricket coach at St Joseph's School in Sevenoaks Road, Orpington, until it closed in 1978. His actual occupation was a Fleet Street print worker.
Roy coached at clubs like Cray Wanderers and Welling, but perhaps most significantly at Gravesend & Northfleet.
