The eldest son of the Reverend Louis Woollcombe and his wife Augusta Rundell Browne. In 1886 he married Agnes Meade Murray (1865-1938), the daughter of John Irvine Murray, in Mun Muu, Idia. During World War I, he served as a British Army General in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and Commander of the 4th Army Corps.
The couple had two sons and a daughter.
